Updating your Z-Wave stick needs to be done only if necessary and exactly according to the instructions for the model and version you have. If your Z-Wave stick is working well, do not attempt a firmware update for it. This is a static controller with a crucial function to your network. Only perform the update when you're 100% confident you have the right environment including the correct firmware file.
There are a few reasons why your stick might have bricked during or after a firmware update:
- The wrong file was applied. Sometimes when trying to update an end device via OTA, you may accidentally click the OTW button and send the update to your Z-Wave Controller. That will brick the device and cannot be undone. Always use the files provided by our support team or published in our support portal for the exact model and version of your device. Here is where to look for firmware files:
- Update instructions and file for the ZST10 700 model
- Update instructions and file for the ZST39 800LR model
- Firmware files for other Z-Wave regions (frequencies) > scroll down on the page to find your region
- There are no files for the ZST10 500 series, please do NOT attempt an update to that hardware version
- Power was interrupted to the stick during the update. If your software attempts a reboot during the update or there was power interruption on your computer during the update process, the Z-Wave stick will be bricked. This may happen more often if a USB extension is used for your USB stick.
Home Assistant / Z-Wave JS UI has a bootloader mode that can sometimes unbrick Z-Wave sticks. We recommend reaching out on the community forums for help and Home Assistant-specific instructions.
If your device is bricked as a result of a firmware update, it cannot be serviced under warranty. Always apply any firmware updates with caution and at your own risk.
