print icon

Are you looking to add Z-Wave control to your gas fireplace? If you already have a standard switch in place, you can easily automate your gas fireplace with the ZEN16 MultiRelay.

Stay cozy throughout the entire year while experiencing the highest level of convenience. Sit back, relax, and turn on your gas fireplace with the simple push of a button or even a voice command if your hub is integrated with a smart speaker. With the ZEN16 MultiRelay, you can schedule when the fireplace will turn on and off, making it easy to save energy and money.

Check that your Z-Wave system supports individual control of each relay in the compatibility list. Review your existing wiring to make sure you're able to identify each connection and match it with the diagram provided. if you're not able to follow the instructions or don't have the necessary tools to complete the installation, please hire a licensed electrician to finalize the project.

Please ensure the fireplace is never left unattended. Never remotely control the fireplace without being on site.

Here are the detailed instructions for controlling your gas fireplace with the ZEN16 MultiRelay:

1. WIRE THE ZEN16 MULTIRELAY:

  • WIRING TIPS: Always take "before" pictures just in case you need to restore the original set-up or send us images for consultation. Use the correct screwdriver size for the terminal screws on your MultiRelay and the wall switch. Use appropriate electrical tools when cutting, prepping, and stripping the electrical wires. If you don't have the necessary tools to perform the installation or if you're not sure how to operate the electrical tools, please hire an electrician to complete the installation for you. Follow the National Electrical Code and your local safety regulations when performing the installation, including (but not limited to), choosing the correct gauge of jumper wires. The recommended gauge for 15 Amp circuits is 14 AWG and 12 AWG for 20 Amp circuits.
  • POWER OFF: Turn the circuit power off in the breaker panel before you start. Keep the MultiRelay unplugged from its power source.
  • CONNECT THE MULTIRELAY: Connect the 2 wires coming from the light switch to the Sw1 terminals on the MultiRelay as shown in the diagram below. Please note that no Voltage can be applied to the switch terminals on the ZEN16. Connect the two wires from the millivolt valve to the R1 terminals on the ZEN16.
  • POWER THE MULTIRELAY: Connect the USB C power source to the MultiRelay, or use the "+" and "-" terminals on the device to bring low voltage power to it. Never use both at the same time. In both cases, you'll need a standard 1A Power Adapter to plug into a standard 120 VAC receptacle. Do NOT use the ZEN16 with laptop or tablet chargers, as they require a large battery on load to activate.

2. PROGRAMMING:

With the ZEN16 successfully installed and powered, it's time to add the MultiRelay to your hub: initiate inclusion (pairing mode) and click the Z-Wave button on the device 3 times quickly. The LED indicator will blink to indicate communication and stay on for 2 seconds to confirm inclusion.

You should now see 4 new on/off devices once included:

  • 3 channels for on/off control of each relay
  • 1 master node to control all relays at the same time and to access and adjust the advanced settings (if your hub supports parameter input)

Once the ZEN16 is installed, the wall switch will behave like a 3-way switch, as Z-Wave acts as the secondary point of control. If the fireplace is turned on via Z-Wave, for example, the physical switch will still be in the off position, and you will need to flip the switch up to turn off the fireplace.
