How to Use the ZEN16 MultiRelay with Commercial Gates

The MultiRelay is a simple and affordable way to add Z-Wave to your commercial gate opener. The below instructions are for the most common scenario so if the diagram doesn't match your installation, please get in touch with us for dedicated instructions.

This article shows how to turn the open, close, and stop functions into Z-Wave commands with the ZEN16 MultiRelay. Note that this part covers the control side of the installation only and if you'd like to monitor the open/close status of your gate, you will need a wireless door sensor to monitor it.

1. WIRE THE MULTIRELAY ZEN16

Please check that your gate opener allows for dry contact inputs from and external controller and doesn't use a proprietary wireless control system to manage the opener.

If you have a simple three button switch, similar to the one shown below, please use the following wiring diagram to install the MultiRelay by the control board:

  • WIRING TIPS: Always take images of the original working set-up before you start disconnecting any wires. You may need to restore it or send us the pictures for review. Use the correct screwdriver size for the terminal screws on your MultiRelay and external switches (if connecting them). Use appropriate electrical tools when cutting, prepping, and stripping electrical wires. If you don’t have the necessary tools to perform the installation or are not sure how to source or handle the tools, please have a licensed electrician complete the installation for you. Follow the National Electrical Code and your local safety regulations when performing the installation, including (but not limited to), choosing the correct gauge of jumper wires. The recommended gauge for 15 Amp circuits is 14 AWG and 12 AWG for 20 Amp circuits.
  • POWER OFF: turn the circuit power off in the breaker panel before you start. Keep the MultiRelay unplugged from its power source.
  • DISCONNECT THE SWITCH: disconnect the wires previously connected to the switch / buttons for open, close, and stop.
  • CONNECT THE MULTIRELAY: Connect the 2 wires for each function (so common on one side and open/close/stop on the other side) from the opener to the R1-R3 terminals. The common needs to be connected to the left (first) terminal on each relay. Then connect each button/switch to the Sw1-Sw3 terminals on the MultiRelay in a similar manner with common connected to the first terminal and open/close/stop buttons connected to the other terminal on each just as pictured below.

  • RESTORE POWER: Connect the opener and ZEN16 MultiRelay back to their power source. Click here for the recommended power supply to power the MultiRelay ZEN16. Please do NOT use laptop chargers or Apple accessories with the MultiRelay. NEVER connect DC power and USB power to the ZEN16 at the same time.

2. INSTALL ADDITIONAL Z-WAVE DEVICES TO COMPLETE THE SET-UP

  • Z-WAVE OPEN/CLOSE SENSOR: You will need a contact sensor to monitor the gate for open or closed status. Use any Z-Wave contact sensor for that purpose.
  • Z-WAVE SIREN: We recommend using a Z-Wave siren to sound an alarm whenever the gate is being opened or closed remotely for added safety. You can use any Z-Wave siren for that purpose.

3. PROGRAM THE MULTIRELAY ON YOUR SYSTEM

  1. Add the MultiRelay ZEN16 and any additional devices to your hub by following the instructions in the manual. Don't turn the relay ON before completing Step 2. All relays should be in the OFF position now.
  2. Change the switch type to Garage Door mode (it will enable momentary control of the relay via Z-Wave as well):
    • If your hub supports parameter input, just change parameters 2, 3, and 4 to value 3 (size 1 byte dec).
    • If your system doesn't give you access to advanced settings, you can change the switch mode through the Z-Wave button sequence directly on your device. For R1 mode change, press and hold the Z-Wave button for 5 seconds until the LED indicator blinks to change the mode to garage door switch. For R2 mode change, click the Z-Wave button twice but the second time hold it for 5 seconds until the LED indicator blinks. For R3 mode change, click the Z-Wave button 3 times but the third time hold it for 5 seconds until the LED indicator blinks.

Now test and rename the relays to correspond with the open, close, and stop actions to easily navigate the device. The relay should automatically turn off once you click ON in your Z-Wave interface and you should still be able to use your wall switch to operate the gate. The Z-Wave door sensor will help you monitor the status of the gate so you can create rules and automations to have your gate open only when it needs to be.

This is when you can also create an automation to sound the connected siren for the duration of the opening/closing cycle (for example, 20 seconds) whenever relay 1 or relay 2 (so the relays attached to the open and close buttons) are on.
