My ZSE40 is Draining the Battery Quickly on Hubitat

This is product is discontinued and replaced with ZSE11.

What does that mean?

If your ZSE40 4-in-1 sensor seems to be eating through batteries, then you may need to connect it without security.

For the C-7 hub specifically, it currently doesn't allow non-secure inclusion for S0 devices but we have found a work around to try in the meantime (thanks bill.d!). While there's nothing we know of right now that could possibly address the problem on the device side, we're actively looking for other solutions to this issue. In the meantime, if you have a C-7 hub, please try the solution below:

You'll need a 500 chip Z-Wave stick to add as a secondary controller to Hubitat, and then use PC Controller to add the sensor without security to the network.

  1. Include the Z-Wave stick as a secondary controller using the PC Controller software (follow the first 4 steps in this support article to set the stick up using the software): In Hubitat, click on Discover Devices > Z-Wave > Z-Wave Inclusion and click on Classic Learn Mode in the PC Controller window. Uncheck any security boxes that Hubitat prompts.

  2. In PC Controller, click on the new PC Controller device created (Node ID different than 1).

  3. Click the 'Add' button.

  4. Click the Z-Wave button on the ZSE40 twice quickly to put it in inclusion mode (the LED indicator will flash quickly). If you open the logging screen in Hubitat, you will see activity including an Add Node completed message.

  5. Go back to the Z-Wave details page in Hubitat and check to see the sensor has been added. There should be "None" in the Security column.

Users of older generation hubs will need to make sure to set Secure Join to Locks / Garage Doors under Settings > Z-Wave Details

We recommend inserting a fresh battery into your sensor to eliminate any power related issues and monitoring the battery level after connecting it without security to ensure the issue is resolved. If your ZSE40 is still having issues, you can give some of these other troubleshoots a try.
