Once the battery is inserted, the ZSE40 4-in-1 Sensor's LED indicator should flash any time you press the Z-Wave button.
If you insert the battery and see no LED activity whatsoever, first check that the battery is inserted and oriented properly. It may just take this small adjustment to get the sensor up and running.
If you find the sensor is still unresponsive after double checking the battery, try the device with a fresh battery if you have one on hand. If the device works fine with a new battery, the issue was probably caused by a drained battery.
But let's say that the sensor shows some LED activity but is unresponsive in other ways - maybe you're unable to wake it up, include, or exclude it from your system.
