Lights Flicker with My ZEN77 Dimmer Switch

Flickering lights? It could indicate a driver incompatibility between the bulb and dimmer.

For the ZEN77 VER 3.0, we have updated to TRIAC as the executive element, which is a leading-edge driver. If your bulb uses MOSFET (trailing-edge) this can cause flickering. You'll want to ensure your lights use the same dimming element as the dimmer to ensure compatibility.

(Earlier versions of the ZEN77, VER 1.0 & 2.0, used MOSFET, a trailing edge driver).

We recommend reaching out to the light/bulb manufacturer to verify the dimming element in your LED lights to ensure dimming compatibility. You can also try adding a bypass to the load.

Here is how to wire the bypass with your ZEN77 Dimmer:

  1. Turn the power off at the breaker before removing the switch from the box and/or handling any wires.
  2. Connect one wire from the bypass to the Load terminal on the ZEN77 - it will also be connected to the load wire going to the light. You can either create a small wire bundle as shown in the diagram below or connect both wires to the 2 holes in the Load terminal on the ZEN77 for a cleaner installation.
  3. Connect the other wire from the bypass to the Neutral bundle where you'll already have the neutral from the light, neutral from the power line, as well as the neutral jumper from the ZEN77 neutral terminal connected together.
  4. Follow the appropriate ZEN77 wiring diagram for all other connections to the dimmer.
  5. Once you connect your switch, secure it in the box, making sure any bare wires and screws are isolated with electrical tape. After the switch is settled back in the box and the wall plate is re-installed, you can turn the power on and test the dimmer again to see if the flickering issue has been resolved.

You'll also want to confirm that your LED bulbs are labeled as dimmable. On/off LED bulbs are not compatible with dimmers and will not perform correctly.

Never use a Z-Wave dimmer with smart bulbs unless you disable paddle control on them first. Dimming smart bulbs from a wall dimmer may damage your equipment.
