With the ZEN17, you can connect program up to 2 garage doors. Ensure you are following all local safety requirements when installing the ZEN17. In order to prevent any accidental operation, please meticulously test the Universal Relay's operations.
The Universal Relay gives you the option to use a wired NC contact sensor on the input side of the ZEN17 to receive open/close notifications to your hub's interface and monitor the status of your garage door. You can also choose to use a wireless contact or tilt sensor to install on your garage door to track its position. We recommend utilizing an audible alarm or siren to provide an alert whenever the doors are being opened or closed remotely.
Follow the steps below to turn your Universal Relay into a DIY smart garage door opener solution via SmartThings:
1. WIRE THE UNIVERSAL RELAY ZEN17
Simple momentary garage door wall switches work well with the ZEN17. Please note, however, that if your garage door opener uses a proprietary wireless control system, you will NOT be able to use the ZEN17 Universal Relay (or any other Z-Wave device) to control the opener.
The diagram provided below can be used if you have a simple one-button garage door switch; wire the Universal Relay next to it (you can wire up to 2 door switches to a single Universal Relay):
- WIRING TIPS: Please ensure you take "before" pictures! In case the original set up should need restoring, or if you need to send us images for consultation, we will need to see the initial set-up to determine the correct wiring for the device. Please ensure you are using the correct screwdriver size for the terminal screws on your Universal Relay and wall switches (if connecting them). The appropriate electrical tools should always be used when cutting, prepping, and stripping electrical wires. If you are unsure of the correct tools, or do not have them to utilize for installation of the device, please hire an electrician to complete the installation for you. Follow the National Electrical Code and your local safety regulations when performing the installation, including (but not limited to), choosing the correct gauge of jumper wires. The recommended gauge for 15 Amp circuits is 14 AWG and 12 AWG for 20 Amp circuits.
- POWER OFF: Before beginning installation, please ensure the circuit power is off in the breaker panel. For now, keep the Universal Relay unplugged from its power source.
- DISCONNECT THE SWITCH: When you open the switch cover, there should be 2 wires coming to the switch from the opener. Leave them connected as they are.
- CONNECT THE UNIVERSAL RELAY:
RESTORE POWER: You are now ready to connect the garage door opener and ZEN17 Universal Relay back to their power source. Click here for the recommended power supply to power the Universal Relay ZEN17. Please do NOT use laptop chargers or Apple accessories with the Universal Relay. NEVER connect AC/DC power and USB power to the ZEN17 at the same time.
2. INSTALL ADDITIONAL Z-WAVE DEVICES TO COMPLETE THE SET-UP
- OPEN/CLOSE SENSOR: You will need an open/close sensor to use the dedicated Garage Door Opener SmartApp discussed below. We recommend using a wireless Z-Wave tilt sensor to reliably track the status of your sectional garage door, but you can also use any Z-Wave contact sensor for that purpose. With the ZEN17 model, you can also use a wired contact sensor connected between the S1 and C input terminals on the Universal Relay as shown in the diagram above. You will need a NC sensor to best work in that type of installation. An NC security sensor will close the circuit when the magnet is close to the sensor (reporting closed status to your Z-Wave hub), and it will open the circuit when the magnet is away from the sensor (reporting open status to your Z-Wave hub).
- Z-WAVE SIREN: We recommend using a Z-Wave siren to sound an alarm whenever the door is being opened or closed remotely as an additional safety precaution. Any Z-Wave siren can be used for that purpose.
3. PROGRAM THE ZEN17 ON SMARTTHINGS
- Install a custom driver for the Universal Relay before adding it to SmartThings. Click here for detailed instructions to add the device to SmartThings.
- Open your SmartThings app and click on the Universal Relay in your device list. Make sure that all of the child relays are in the OFF state.
- Click the 3 dots in the top right corner and click on Settings.
- Set the Input Type for Relay 1/S1 to value 11: garage door mode for the relay (and R2/S2 if using).

Parameter 2: Choose the wall switch or input type you want to connect to the S1 C terminals.
Values: 11 – garage door mode for the relay (momentary contact) and door sensor type for the input (use with wired analog door/window sensors and garage gate openers).
IMPORTANT: If you set this parameter to value 4-11, a notification will pop up that states " This device's capabilities have changed. Leave this screen and then come back to it to access the updated capabilities." Follow the prompt and exit the screen, then return to the ZEN17 tile.
5. At the bottom of the settings, click to enable separate relays. If you want a separate child devices to monitor the inputs, also click to enable separate inputs.
6. This will create 2 additional open/close entities for you to monitor the status of your garage door.
7. Set Parameter 10 Input Trigger for Relay 1 (and Relay 2 if using) to Value 0: input trigger disabled, to disable the input trigger so that the sensors changing state won't trigger the relays controlling the opener.

Parameter 10: Choose if you’d like the connected input (switch) on S1 C / VC C to trigger the load connected to R1 or if you want to use the input reports for monitoring only and separate the output from the input.
Values: 0 – input trigger disabled; 1 – input trigger enabled (default).
Now that you have your Universal Relay programmed, test that everything is working as expected, and then enjoy your new smart garage door!
