The key to any successful installation is prep! Before doing anything, read the instructions included with your ZEN54 and gather the tools you'll need. Check if additional wire or wire nuts are needed to complete the installation.

The recommended wire gauge for your installation is 14 AWG as used in most standard 120 V installations. Other basic electrical tools you may need on hand for the installation include a voltage meter and electrical pliers.

Important: Before installing the motor controller, make sure the ZEN54 is suitable for the location. The maximum load for the ZEN54 is 4 A, 960 W.

Here are a few other things to check before installing your switch:

Use the appropriate wiring diagram! We have wiring diagrams for various installations. If you are unable to match the wiring, please send us images of the wiring available and we will verify if the ZEN53 can be installed.
Make sure the gang box you are about to install the switch has power with neutral wire available - you will not be able to get the ZEN54 Dimmer to work without a neutral wire.
Unlike regular mechanical switches, Z-Wave switches require all of the wires to be connected exactly as indicated - line and load wires can never be swapped as it sometimes happens to the most experienced electricians.
Ask a professional. For safety reasons, we don't recommend installing the switch yourself if you're not comfortable with an electrical installation. If you're able to, hire a licensed professional to help with the installation.
