How to Add Your ZSE70 Outdoor Motion Sensor to SmartThings

Ready to include your new ZSE70 Outdoor Motion Sensor to SmartThings? Check out the instructions below! You will need to install the lua Edge driver to access advanced settings and ensure the device is properly recognized and configured on SmartThings. With the driver installed, you can proceed to auto-include or manually include your ZSE70 to SmartThings.

NEVER include the sensor powered with 12 V and then switch over to batteries. Your hub will recognize the sensor as a Z-Wave repeater and the batteries will drain quickly. Always include the sensor powered by batteries only if you’re planning to use it as a battery device.

Here are the inclusion steps for your ZSE70 once you've decided how to power the sensor:

Scan Nearby in the SmartThings app:

  1. Power the device by either battery or 12-24V AC/DC:
    • If you choose to power the unit with batteries, first twist the back cover of the ZSE70 counter clockwise to open it and access the batteries. Pull on the battery tab to power the sensor. The LED indicator will start blinking.
    • If you prefer to power the ZSE70 via 12-24V AC/DC, first replace the bottom cap with the terminal seal. Unscrew the cap and connect 12-24 V wires to the terminals (follow polarity). Install the cover: gently mount the 3 pieces included in the box starting with the frame, then add the seal, and screw the cover on. You can scan the QR code in the manual to watch a video detailing how to install the 12-24V power source.
  2. Tap the plus icon in the home screen
  3. Tap Device
  4. Tap "Scan nearby" (in the corner of the screen)
  5. While the app says "Scanning...", click the Z-Wave button 3 times as quickly as possible. The LED indicator will start blinking to confirm inclusion mode and turn off once inclusion is completed.
  6. After a few seconds, the new sensor should appear in the app. Rename it if needed and return to the home page

Scan QR Code in the SmartThings App::

  1. Tap the plus icon in the home screen
  2. Tap Device
  3. Tap "Scan QR code" (in the corner of the screen) and scan the QR code located on the back of the remote, then enter the PIN code printed under the QR code.
  4. Click "Start" under "Let's get started with your Z-Wave device"
  5. Select the room you'd like the device to be added to and click "Next"
  6. While the app says "Get your device ready to connect. Check the user manual for details.", power the device (important to do this AFTER QR scanby either battery or 12-24V AC/DC:
  7. The app will indicate when the device connects, it may take up to 45 seconds so please don't leave the screen just yet.
  8. It will say "Success" once the device is found. Tap it to rename the device, and tap Save.
  9. Tap Done to complete the setup.

Having issues including the sensor? Follow the instructions here to exclude the device first. This can be done even if the device has never been included successfully; it simply acts as a soft Z-Wave reset that generally resolves most inclusion or configuration issues on Z-Wave devices.
