The ZSE70 Outdoor Motion Sensor is a versatile device, allowing you to choose the best method to power the sensor; battery or 12-24V AC/Dc power.
Battery Powered
If you prefer the sensor to be powered by batteries, the sensor comes equipped with 2 CR123A batteries. Make sure to insert the batteries in the proper orientation, and always include the sensor to the hub using your preferred power method. When including on battery power, the sensor will be enrolled as a non-repeating device to conserve battery life.
We do not recommend rechargeable batteries as these usually decrease in max voltage with time, so you may see a shorter battery life if using these. The Z-Wave chip manufacturer also requires all Z-Wave devices to report low battery at 2.6V and many rechargeable batteries are not a full 3V when charged so it may seem like the battery is empty even at full charge.
12-24V AC/DC Power
If you prefer your ZSE70 sensor having a constant power source, you have the option of powering the device with a 12-24V AC or DC power source. NEVER include the sensor powered with 12 V and then switch over to batteries without excluding and re-including on battery power. Your hub will continue to recognize the sensor as a Z-Wave repeater until excluded and re-included on battery, and the batteries will drain quickly. Always include the sensor powered by batteries only if you’re planning to use it as a battery device.
Here is just one 12V DC power option that is available directly from The Smartest House to use with your ZSE70 Outdoor Motion Sensor. This power supply is 80" in length; if a longer supply is needed, it can be extended with a pair of 18-24 AWD wires that can pigtail with the power supply cable:
Your ZSE70 can also be powered from your existing landscape lighting low Voltage power source too!
Note: The sensor cannot be powered by both power supplies at the same time (i.e. using battery power and 12-24V AC/DC power as back-up).
