Using the ZEN17 Universal Relay to automate your whole house fan places you in complete control of your fans without needing to leave the comfort of your seat to turn them on or shut them down. Whether you want your fans to cool your home for 30 minutes before calling it quits for the night, or a full eight hours, you can set the timer and let your system do the rest. Even better, it can help you cut your energy costs even more by making it convenient to turn your fan off as soon as your home becomes sufficiently cool.
Here are detailed instructions on how to add Z-Wave to your whole house fan with the Universal Relay:
1. WIRE THE UNIVERSAL RELAY ZEN17
The diagram below shows an installation with a 2-speed wall switch in a standard QuietCool whole-house fan model and the ZEN17 Universal Relay. If this matches your installation, please follow the below diagram to wire the Universal Relay:
- WIRING TIPS: Always "before" pictures prior to installing the ZEN17. Whether you need to restore the original set-up, or reach out to us for help, we will need to verify the original wiring to ensure the installation is correct. Ensure you use the correct screwdriver size for the terminal screws on your Universal Relay and wall switches (if connecting them). Please verify you have the proper electrical tools for cutting, prepping, and stripping electrical wires. If you lack the required tools to correctly perform the installation or are unsure which tools to use or how, please hire an electrician to complete the installation for you. Please follow the National Electrical Code and your local safety regulations when performing the installation, including (but not limited to), choosing the correct gauge of jumper wires. The recommended gauge for 15 Amp circuits is 14 AWG and 12 AWG for 20 Amp circuits.
- POWER OFF: Please verify you have turned off the circuit power in the breaker panel before you start the installation. Keep the Universal Relay unplugged from its power source while performing the installation.
- CONNECT THE SWITCH: Wire the high-speed connection from the switch to the S1 terminal on the ZEN17, and then low-speed connection to the S2 terminal on the ZEN17. Next, connect the common on the switch to the C terminals on the ZEN17.
- CONNECT THE UNIVERSAL RELAY: Connect the high-speed connection from the fan to the R1 NO terminal on the ZEN17 and the low-speed connection from the fan to the R2 NO terminal on the ZEN17. Connect the fan's power source (120 V) to the C terminals on the R1 and R2 terminals of the ZEN17.
- POWER THE UNIVERSAL RELAY: Connect a dedicated low-voltage power source to the ZEN17 (a power supply like this one will work great). Please do NOT use phone/laptop chargers or Apple accessories with the Universal Relay. NEVER connect AC/DC power and USB power to the ZEN17 at the same time.
2. PROGRAM THE UNIVERSAL RELAY
Here is what you need to best program your device on your Z-Wave hub:
- Add the Universal Relay to your hub: Hubitat, SmartThings, Home Assistant, Z-Wave General Inclusion
- Enable DC motor mode (parameter 24 needs to be changed to value 1) to prevent both relays from being triggered at the same time. Follow the hub-specific steps in the following articles to access and adjust the advanced settings for the ZEN17 Universal Relay: Hubitat, SmartThings, Home Assistant
- Use the R1 child device to trigger the high speed of the fan and the R2 child device to trigger the low speed of the fan. Do NOT use the master ZEN17 device to control the fan.
