4-Way Diagram for ZEN71, ZEN72, and ZEN32 Switches

Zooz ZEN71, ZEN72, and ZEN32 switches can be wired in 4-way set ups with regular on/off switches only if load and line are in the same box. They can also be wired with ZAC99 momentary switches in other 4-way configurations as long as you have a neutral connection available in one of the boxes and access to advanced settings in your Z-Wave hub. Please look at the below instructions and diagram carefully before attempting the installation.

  • A 4-way is what we call 3-point control so 3 different switches controlling the same set of lights (if you're looking for 4 point control with 4 switches in the install, click here).
  • Zooz can only be wired in a 4-way if you have load and line in the same box. If you have load and line separated between two boxes, there's no way to wire these Zooz models with the two other existing switches unless you use 2 ZAC99 momentary switches and follow the appropriate diagram below. You will need to change the 3-way switch type for your Zooz smart switch in order to use it with the momentary switches so make sure you can access them from your Z-Wave system. The ZAC99 is a one-button switch and only the top portion of the switch is pressed. If you click the switch once, it will turn on. If you press and hold it while it's on, it will decrease brightness (when connected to the ZEN72 dimmer model). If you click it again, it'll turn off. Once off, when you press and hold it will increase brightness (when connected to the ZEN72 dimmer model).
  • If you have load and line in separate boxes, look into our S2 switches. Zooz S2 switches have an different wiring schematic that allows you to use the switches in 4 and 5-ways where load and line are separated. Here's more about wiring S2 switches in 4-ways (NOTE: the wiring for S2 switches is different than for the ZEN71, ZEN72, and ZEN32 switches. Do not try to wire S2 models and the models from this article the same way. The S2 models cannot be connected to the ZAC99 momentary switches).
  • The diagram shows all connections but ground (the ground wire was excluded in order to simplify the illustrations). Make sure you always ground all of your switches.
  • Colors and location of the common screw on the 3-way and 4-way switches are just for illustration and will not always match your set-up so please don't follow the colors or screw orientation blindly.
  • IMPORTANT: Once you connect your switches, please secure them in the box, making sure any bare wires and screws are isolated with electrical tape. After the switches are settled back in the box and the wall plate is re-installed, you can turn the power on and test the switches for on/off operation.
  • Use only simple on/off switches without LED indicators when wiring them with Zooz Z-Wave switches (no dimmers!).

4-ways are tricky and even electricians sometimes have trouble making the connections right. Follow the diagram exactly as shown, making sure the Zooz switch is installed in the box with line and load in it.

4-WAY WIRING DIAGRAM FOR ZEN32, ZEN71, AND ZEN72 MODELS CONNECTED TO ZAC99 MOMENTARY SWITCHES:

NOTE: You will need to change the 3-way switch type to momentary in the advanced settings of your ZEN71, ZEN72, or ZEN32 switch in order for the ZAC99 momentary switches to control the light in this installations.

Not sure where to find the settings in your Z-Wave hub? Try these shortcut links:

Advanced settings for the ZEN71 switch

Advanced settings for the ZEN32 scene controller

OPTION 1: This is the same scenario as in the diagrams above when load and line are in the same box.

OPTION 2: Load and line are in separate boxes. You can choose whether you put the main Zooz smart switch in the box with line or load.

If you have any questions about the process, please do NOT attempt the installation! Reach out to us with any questions first, we'll be happy to help you complete the wiring safely.
