Having trouble pairing your Universal Relay to SmartThings? Give exclusion a try!
You can exclude any Z-Wave device from a network even if it hasn't been added before. The process will help SmartThings recognize the device more easily and allow you to include if it was having issues during the inclusion process.
For the ZEN17 specifically, you'll want to make sure you have the new lua Edge driver installed first so that the relay is recognized correctly with all of its advanced settings. You can find the quick and easy steps to install the Edge driver right here.
With the handler installed, you're ready to try exclusion:
- Open your SmartThings app and locate your SmartThings hub under Devices. Tap the hub to see the device details.
-
Tap the three dots in the upper right hand corner and tap Settings
- Tap Z-Wave Utilities
- Tap Z-Wave Exclusion
- While the app is searching for a device, click the Z-Wave button on the device 3 times very quickly
- The app will indicate when the device is successfully removed. Tap Done
You'll want to give inclusion another try after you've received a confirmation from SmartThings that the ZEN17 was successfully excluded.
Here are other troubleshooting steps to try if you're still having issues with including your Universal Relay:
- If you didn't receive the successful exclusion message, then it's possible the command was not registered on the first try - perform the exclusion steps again.
- If the device excluded successfully, then that means the device is ready to pair - if it doesn't include with 3 quick clicks of the Z-Wave button, try 4-5 clicks as quickly as possible.
- Make sure the device is within range of the hub or another non-battery powered Z-Wave device to ensure the hub can reach it. If the target location is a bit pair from the hub / other devices, try adding a Z-Wave signal repeater between the ZEN17's location and the hub. If you have a hand-held secondary hub, try using it to include the device. This is especially helpful if the relay is located in the garage, or another location that can often come with range and connectivity issues due to metal elements or limited Z-Wave neighbors.
- If your ZEN17 paired with the hub but isn't registering Z-Wave commands, you may need to give these connectivity troubleshooting steps a try.
