How Can I Identify the Wiring For My Zooz Switches?

Don't install your Zooz switches if you're not absolutely sure that you have identified all of your wires correctly.

Safety first! It's always best to consult a licensed electrician to complete the installation if you have any doubt about the process. Improper connections may cause personal injury and equipment damage.

You can also reach out to us with .JPG or .JPEG images of your switch boxes with the existing switched installed to receive a complimentary wiring consultation from our technicians. Here is what we need to provide you with comprehensive wiring instructions:

  1. Your product needs to be registered here first.
  2. Description of your installation:
    • Is it a single pole set-up, a 3-way, or a larger installation?
    • Are you using regular bulbs or smart bulbs?
    • Are you wiring the Zooz switch with regular mechanical switches, ZAC99 momentary switches, or other smart switches in a virtual 3-way/4-way set-up?
    • Do you have a preferred switch box the switch should be installed in (applicable to selected scenarios and switch models only)?
  3. Clear wiring images (.JPG or .JPEG format) from every switch box in your original fully working installation with existing switches installed (so if you're dealing with a 3-way, we will need images from each of the 2 switch boxes):
    • Always turn the power OFF before handling the wires
    • Unscrew all of the switches in the box (even the ones that aren't part of your installation) and bring them forward so we can see the wires in the back of the box
    • Point to the switch we're troubleshooting in each of the boxes
    • Point to the common (usually black) screw on the 3-way switch so we can trace the wire connected to it
    • Illuminate the interior of the box so that we can trace each wire from the switch terminals to its source romex or wire bundle in the back of the box
    • Make sure we can trace any other wires coming out of the romex cables involved in our set-up to where they connect in the back of the box, even if they don't connect directly to the switch
    • Uncover any wire bundles (usually black and white) in the back of the box so we can see which wires are connected to them

Here is a sample of the perfect image that allows us to trace and identify all of the wires in an electrical box:

Clear .JPG or .JPEG images of a fully working electrical installation with existing switches installed are the only way our technicians are able to identify the wires in your switch boxes remotely. Unfortunately, wiring diagrams, verbal descriptions, or images of switch boxes with just the wires (no switch connected) of your set-up will not be enough for us to make any wiring recommendations.

We are unable to assist you with restoring your original set-up so please make sure you take clear images of your working set-up before making any changes when installing your smart switches.

If your current installation isn't fully functional, you will not be able to use any of the Zooz switches in your installation. We recommend consulting a licensed electrician to fix your installation first.

Please make sure you meet ALL of the above requirements to minimize the amount of back-and-forth emails and receive your custom wiring instructions quicker.

Always use simple, mechanical on/off 3-way switches when connecting them to Zooz switches unless making a virtual 3-way set-up.

No dimmers or electronic switches with a LED indicator may be wired to Zooz switches or dimmers.

IMPORTANT: Once you connect your switches, please secure them in the box, making sure any bare wires and screws are isolated with electrical tape. After the switches are settled back in the box and the wall plate is re-installed, you can turn the power on and test the switches for on/off operation.
